Clarkebury Secondary School multi-sports court

Overview
The aim of the 94+ Projects for Madiba campaign is to celebrate former president Nelson Mandela and his legacy, by improving infrastructure in 94 or more schools across South Africa and to give hope and dignity to the learners attending these schools. Novus Holdings joined this campaign and decided to assist Eastern Cape heritage school, Clarkebury Senior Secondary by building a multi-purpose sports court that has benefited the school, as well as the community.

Support: Year 1
Project support commenced in 2012 and the first year was dedicated to erecting the multi-purpose sports court, which included transforming the foundation of the court into a suitable medium, which meant excavating 260 mᶾ of soil and replacing it with 470 tons of rock, which was no easy feat as tarred roads are rare in the area.

Support: Year 2
In the second year of our commitment to this project we held the official handover of the multi-purpose sports facility in conjunction with the Department of Education and the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga. Sporting equipment, including bibs, soccer balls, whistles and basket balls were also provided to the school.

Learners from the school and the community have greatly benefited from this facility. The school’s pass rate increased from 74.6% in 2012 to 85.9% in 2013.
